Facebook may have entertained the possibility of a dedicated music play in the past, a la MySpace Music. But the company has since shifted its sensibilities, at least according to recent statements. “We have no plans to launch a music service on Facebook,” a representative told TechCrunch, responding to an inquiry related to a suspected music stab.
That should put a damper on lingering rumors, including suspicions of a potential dalliance between Facebook and Spotify. As time wears on, Facebook and MySpace appear to be pursuing different strategies, a divergence that gives MySpace a much bigger lane for music. That was highlighted by the recent purchase of the Facebook-embedded iLike, part of a media-involved strategy at MySpace.
